The chief of
police in Memphis wants to know who runs a blog that has been critical if him
and his department. "In what could be a landmark case of privacy and the
1st Amendment," the anonymous bloggers write on the site, "Godwin has
illegally used his position and the City of Memphis as a ram to ruin the
Constitution of the United States." He has a "long road" to go
if he wants to force AOL to give up those names because it is a constitutional
issue. "It wasn't clear if the lawsuit is aimed at shutting down the site
or if it's part of an effort to stop leaks that might affect
investigations." Come on! We know it was an effort to shut this blogger
up. Politicians (and the police chief is certainly a politician) just don't
like criticism, and some think they have the power to shut such people up. They
need to be disabused of this notion. Next, he'll want to know who I am. All he
has to do is ask. (Memphis Commercial Appeal)
