Economy Okay

In Washington, DC, anyway. Did you know that Washington, DC has the lowest unemployment rate (just over 6% in the nation? With the U. S. government the biggest employer, not only there, but in the entire United States. Government employees now number more than half of job-holders, nationwide. “Last week, Michigan’s Bureau of Labor Market Information announced that their state’s unemployment rate spiked in June, hitting 15.2%, the highest rate since mid-1983. Five other states, Rhode Island (12.4%), Oregon (12.2%), South Carolina (12.1%), Nevada (12%), and California (11.6%) all have either matched or surpassed their all time unemployment highs. Nationwide, a total of fifteen states are now suffering from 10% unemployment. The Federal Reserve predicts that double-digit unemployment will envelope most of the country later this year.

"But despite the weakness of the economy nationwide, one region in the country is doing much better. Compared to the nation 9.5% unemployment average, at 6.2%, the unemployment rate in the Washington D.C. metro region is lower than any other major metropolitan area in the country. And there is no secret about the source of D.C.’s economic strength: the rest of the country’s tax dollars siphoned through the rapidly expanding federal government. Fifteen cents of every dollar the federal government doles out throughout the world is spent in the Washington area. Last year alone, the federal government poured $133 billion into the area making the federal government the source for about one-third of Washington’s $401 billion economy” (Heritage Foundation)

What the Hell Are They Doing?

The Constitution says the Congress “shall make NO law concerning religion or the practice thereof.” How hard is that to understand? Yet “authorities” in a Virginia jail are removing religious passages from letters written to inmates. How do they justify that? Probably by saying it is “policy,” not law. Or that the U. S. Constitution does not apply to state law, which is stupidly wrong. Each state had to pledge NOT to make a law contrary to the U. S. Constitution BEFORE being allowed into the union, so constitutional provisions DO apply. They SAY “such materials could be dangerous,” without saying HOW. I’d like to KNOW how a Bible verse could be “dangerous.” I’m not a “religious fanatic,” but I AM a fanatic about people’s RIGHTS. Even those of criminals in jail; and the right to their religion is an inalienable right. A right every person has by being BORN. A right that cannot be legally denied them by ANYBODY. Much less a bunch of overbearing local “officials.” (One News Now)

Ethics Complaints Too Easy

That’s the reason there have been so many filed against Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and others, such as Newt Gingrich at the height of his power. They’re easy to file and cost a lot of money to fight; and they are routinely used against a candidate by his/her opponents, true or not. I guess Palin thought if she resigned, the ethics complaints would stop. But this newest one shows that as long as she is a “force to be reckoned with” in Republican politics, they won’t. And now she hasn’t got the state to pay for her defense (although she now has an opportunity to earn [key word, “EARN”] millions). The latest one, a classic if insignificance, alleges that the media paid her for interviews. Who cares? Soon she will be a private citizen and they can pay her what they want, if they’re that stupid. But that’s one drawback in politics. You can’t file SUIT against an officeholder, but you can force him/her to pay a lot of money (usually paid for by taxpayers) to fight all those silly complaints. The latest one, filed by an Anchorage resident, was an obvious attempt to gain notoriety, since he/she immediately faxed a copy to a local television station. This is the 17th such complaint, and the second since she announced her resignation. Most have been dismissed as groundless, as will this one (Update: since this was originally written, there's a new complaint: that she got private donors to pay for her defense on previous complaints. What the hell for? the STATE was pauing for her defense, as is only right and lawful.). C’mawn, people! Get your heads out of your collective rear ends and leave this woman ALONE! You’re just showing how much truth-telling frightens you. (One News Now)
