The last month of his life was his longest sober period in years. And he was planning on seducing Mary Jo Kopechne when he drunkenly drove his car off a bridge at Chappaquiddick. Disappointed he wouldn’t “get any” that night, he (still drunkenly) swam to shore (leaving his former conquest to die), to take a shower and go to bed, not bothering to call the cops to go out and maybe save her life because that would “be a bother.” He was going to “fess up” to all this in his book, to be published after his death, but his family nixed it, removing all parts of the book pertaining to it. This is the kind of man Massachussets elected and re-elected for years. The kind of man who literally RAN the senate since the sixties and even ALMOST became president. A man Bush, and other presidents, called "friend." (
